Proteus.one emergency app

Installation and Use of the Smartphone App

After installation, please fill in your first and last name under ‘Settings.’
If desired, please provide the name and contract number of your travel insurance in the ‘Insurance / Insurance Number’ field. This facilitates the processing of medical emergencies and medical assistance services.

Please note that the app only works if your mobile number is registered in the alarm center. Therefore, the ‘Your Mobile Number’ field should contain the phone number of this smartphone in the format +491234567 (for Germany, without spaces). Change the registered number only if you are using a new mobile number, and the change has been communicated to PROTEUS.one GmbH.

The ‘Executive Protection Officer’ setting is only used by employees of your personal protection team and adds relevant functions to the app.

The emergency call app is an integral part of high-quality personal protection concepts by PROTEUS.one GmbH. It is primarily designed to enable quick and ‘silent’ alerting of personal protection staff in case of threat.

Silent alarm

A silent alarm is generated when you briefly press the Flic button. The alarm can also be triggered by a long press of the Flic button. However, we recommend remembering the alarm by a short click. In principle, it is also possible to trigger a silent alarm by pressing the ‘Silent Alert’ button in the app.

Upon successful transmission of the alarm, your smartphone vibrates briefly. To keep the alert as discreet as possible, you will not receive further notifications. The app remains in the background, and in the app, the color of the ‘Silent Alert’ button changes from red to purple in the alarm state. In this state, location data of the smartphone is transmitted to the alarm center until the alarm is processed and reset by the personal protection team.

If no alarm could be triggered (e.g., because your device currently has no internet connection), the phone vibrates three times quickly. This informs you that emergency services have not been notified yet. Once the data connection is restored, the alarm is automatically forwarded.

Security Team

This function is only available in the app. With this button, you have the option to call your personal protection team.

Medical Emergency

The app also offers the option to contact medical professionals in a medical emergency in Germany and abroad through this button and initiate medical assistance services. For this purpose, an SMS with your location data is initially transmitted, followed by a call to the alarm center of med con team. Please confirm the prompts that appear one after the other.

Go to the menu and select ‘Connect Flic Button,’ making sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.

Press the ‘Start Scan’ button in the app. Press the supplied Flic button until it is displayed on the page. You should see a green Bluetooth symbol in front of the button’s ID.

The connection can be tested by pressing the button twice quickly. If there is no audible and visual confirmation, please check if a.) an active connection is displayed in the ‘Connect Flic Button’ menu and b.) Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.

If desired, you can connect multiple Flic buttons to the app. For example, it might be useful to install an additional Flic button in your vehicle or at your workplace. (Please note that a Flic button can only be paired with exactly one smartphone. If other family members also use your vehicle, for example, the Flic button placed there will not trigger an alarm on other devices.)

To trigger an alarm, an active internet connection, a Bluetooth connection to the Flic button, and access to location data are required.

The app settings can be checked on iOS under Settings > PROTEUS.one

For proper functionality, the app requires the following permissions:

  • Location > Always
  • Precise Location > On
  • Bluetooth > On
  • Siri & Search > (no special settings required)
  • Notifications > Allow notifications
  • Sounds > On
  • Badges > On
  • Background App Refresh > On
  • Mobile Data > On

Yes. Click the Flic button twice quickly. You will receive an audible feedback, and the message ‘Checking the connection to the Flic button was successful’ will appear. Please close this message with ‘OK.’

This test confirms that the app is active in the background (i.e., not accidentally closed), that Bluetooth is turned on, and the connection to the button is working. However, this function does not check if your device has an active internet connection and if valid location data is available.

If there is no audible and visual confirmation, please check if a.) an active connection is displayed in the ‘Connect Flic Button’ menu and b.) Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.

The battery of the FLIC Button typically lasts two years and longer.

The battery (CR2032) can be easily replaced by pressing the button against a surface with the back and turning the housing counterclockwise. Insert the new battery with the ‘+’ side up.

The app starts automatically when you turn on your smartphone and remains active in the background. Please note that no alarm can be triggered if the app is manually closed. Manually restart the app if there is a likelihood that you will need the alarm functionality during your activities.

We recommend testing the activity of the app and the connection of the Flic button (click the Flic button twice quickly) when leaving your home or office.

When using Shortcuts in combination with the Action button, Accessibility features, or Siri voice commands, the app will launch and trigger an alarm even if the app is not running in the background.

To use Siri, accessibility features, and the Action Button, you need to create shortcuts. The necessary shortcut is provided during installation.

Shortcuts are synced with the Watch and are then available there as well.

Create a Shortcut as follows:

  • Shortcuts app > tap “+” to add a Shortcut > Enter a name > select “PROTEUS” from the menu > select the command “Set Alarm” > Choose the function using “Safety or Medical”: Silent Alarm, Medical, Ask Every Time).

We recommend the following naming for shortcuts:

  • “Trigger Alarm” – Ask Every Time (displays a selection menu)
  • “Silent Alarm” – Silent Alarm
  • “Medical Alarm” – Medical Emergency

You can activate alarms using Siri and the available Shortcuts. For more reliable triggering, we recommend activating Siri using the iPhone’s Side button instead of relying solely on voice commands.

Voice commands (depending on how the Shortcuts are named):

  • “Hey Siri, trigger alarm” (Menu)
  • “Hey Siri, silent alarm”
  • “Hey Siri, medical alarm”

If you activate Siri using the Side button, please use the following voice commands:

  • “Trigger alarm” (Menu)
  • “Silent alarm”
  • “Medical alarm”

Use the shortcuts you have created (see above).

Notes:

  • The first time you use it, Siri may ask you to confirm the shortcut — please confirm.
  • Test it first by manually running a PROTEUS shortcut in the Shortcuts app.

You can assign the shortcuts to the Action Button, Accessibility, and the Control Menu:

  • Action Button – Settings > Action Button > Shortcut — Assign PROTEUS shortcut.
  • Accessibility – Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Tap Back > Select function (e.g., triple-tap) > Shortcuts — Assign PROTEUS shortcut.
  • Control Center – Open Control Center > Plus icon (top left) > Add Control > Shortcut > Shortcuts — Assign PROTEUS shortcut.

The PROTEUS app provides widgets for the iPhone in various sizes. You can add the widgets to the home screen and the “Today” view.

  • Edit Home Screen > Edit > Add Widget > Select the PROTEUS widget.

Installation and Use of the Smartwatch Companion App

If your iPhone is set to install apps automatically on the Apple Watch, the companion app will appear after pairing. If not, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll to find the PROTEUS App under “Available Apps”.
  3. Tap Install.

No extra configuration is needed. The Apple Watch app syncs with your iPhone settings. Just ensure notification and location permissions are granted on the iPhone for full functionality.

You can trigger an alert on your Apple Watch by opening the app and choosing the type of alert (silent alert or medical emergency). The alert will be initiated and followed up on your connected iPhone.

You can trigger alerts via the complication (small app icon on the watch face):

  1. Tap the complication. The app opens directly showing a 15 seconds countdown together with the other two types of alert or a cancel option.
  2. While the countdown is running you still can cancel the alert by tapping the corresponding option. This is to prevent false alerts when the complication was tapped by mistake. To return to your Apple Watch’s home screen (watch face), press the Digital Crown once.
  3. If no option is chosen before the countdown ends, the process is cancelled and no alert is sent.
  4. To trigger an alert, choose the type you wish to send (e.g., silent alert or medical emergency). This ends the countdown immediately.
  5. If you have triggered a medical emergency, follow the next steps on your mobile phone (send a text message and call the med con team emergency center).

Complications are shortcuts on your watch face. To add:

  1. Long-press the watch face.
  2. Tap Edit > swipe to Complications.
  3.  Tap a slot and choose PROTEUS from the list.

You can display the widget in the Smart Stack and “pin” it:

  • Open the Smart Stack (turn the Crown up) > Edit > Plus > Add PROTEUS widget > Enable Pin (yellow, on the right).

To trigger an alarm, open the Smart Stack and tap the widget. A menu will appear.
An active alarm is displayed in the widget with a color indicator and corresponding text.

On an Apple Watch ULTRA, you can assign shortcuts to the Action Button:

  • Apple Watch Ultra: Settings > Action Button — Assign a PROTEUS shortcut for immediate alarm triggering.

You can activate alarms on the Apple Watch using Siri and the available Shortcuts. For more reliable activation, we recommend activating Siri using the side button (Crown) instead of relying solely on voice commands.

After triggering Siri using the side button (Crown), please use the following voice commands (depending on how the shortcuts are named):

  • “Activate alarm” (Menu)
  • “Silent Alarm”
  • “Medical Alarm”

Use the Shortcuts you have created (see above).

Notes for the Apple Watch:

  • On the watch, the voice command must match exactly the text displayed in the Shortcuts app (no variations).
  • Use the Apple Watch’s side button (Crown) to activate Siri on the watch. Otherwise, if your iPhone is nearby, “Hey Siri” might be answered by the iPhone instead.
  • The first time you use it, Siri may ask you to confirm the shortcut—please confirm.
  • Test it first by manually running a PROTEUS shortcut in the Shortcuts app on the watch.

Two scenarios are possible:

  1. If your Apple Watch has mobile connectivity (eSIM): The alert is sent directly from the watch.
  2. If it only has Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and is offline: The alert is queued and will be sent once the watch reconnects to your iPhone.

Yes.

If you triggered a silent alert, the corresponding button will switch its color to purple.

If you triggered a medical emergency, the corresponding button will switch its color to orange.

Additionally, the device will vibrate to confirm.
